As the president of the Commission has recently been “flirting” with right-wing and far-right political groups, the “Green” members of the European Parliament have made it clear that they will not support Ursula von der Leyen for a second term if she makes an agreement with far-right nationalists.

According to Terry Reintke, the German president of the Greens of the European Parliament and lead candidate of the Group of the Greens/European Free Alliance combination, her group would not support the center-right Commission president if she cooperates with Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni’s team ” Brothers of Italy (Brothers of Italy), the Conservatives and the Reformers (ECR).

“We are not going to join a coalition or a majority, for example, with the ECR. So von der Leyen will have to make a choice,” Reintke said, according to the Guardian.

The Green leader also warned that if the Commission president joins forces with the ECR – which has repeatedly voted against the EU’s green policies, the EU’s plan to tackle the climate crisis will be at risk.

“This would be a disaster not only for the climate, but also for Europe’s economic position” in the face of intense competition from the US and China, Reintke said.
