While both ultra-Orthodox parties have come out in favor of the proposal, the Knesset’s two far-right national religious parties are threatening to topple the government if the deal is approved
Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s biggest ally said Tuesday he would provide “full support” to a deal to free the hostages.
The statement by Shas, an ultra-Orthodox Jewish party that holds 11 of the 120 seats in parliament, followed strong opposition to a possible deal between the two far-right coalition partners.
“At the faction meeting that took place yesterday, it was discussed the Israeli proposal for the agreement. Ultimately, the faction decided to fully support the Israeli proposal, which includes long-term measures for the return of the hostages,” the party said in a statement.
“Shas supports the proposal, the prime minister and the war cabinet to face all pressure, reach an agreement and save the lives of many of our brothers and sisters who are in captivity.”
Shas’ support comes less than a day after United Torah Judaism president Yitzhak Goldknopf tweeted that his party “will support any proposal that leads to the release of the hostages.”
While both ultra-Orthodox parties have come out in favor of the proposal, which Biden has presented as Israeli, the Knesset’s two far-right national religious parties, Otzma Yehudit and Religious Zionism, have threatened to bring down the government if the deal is approved, saying that tantamount to surrendering to Hamas.
