The Patriot system is among the most advanced of its kind in the world; it can engage aircraft, ballistic missiles and cruise missiles, hitting targets at a distance of up to 100 kilometers and at an altitude of up to 30 kilometers.
US President Joe Biden is preparing to announce that his country will deploy another array of the Patriot air defense system to Ukraine to help it counter Russian incursions, the New York Times reported Tuesday, citing government sources. of which he did not name.
Mr. Biden made that decision last week after a series of meetings, the paper explained.
John Kirby, a spokesman for the White House National Security Council, declined to confirm the report when asked about it yesterday.
According to the Times, this array is currently in Poland, where a US military force is deployed, and could be on Ukrainian soil within days.
If the information is confirmed, it will be the second system of its kind to be made available by the US to the Ukrainian armed forces. The green light for sending the former was given by Mr Biden 18 months ago, when Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky visited Washington for the first time since the invasion of Ukraine by Russian armed forces in February 2022.

Germany has provided Ukraine with two such systems and has promised to send a third. Washington is pressing its allies to also send arrays, the number of which internationally is comparatively small, as are the number of missiles in use.
