A far-right man (with links to neo-Nazis) is believed to be the man who attacked with a knife and seriously injured a 12-year-old in a shopping mall in the northern Finnish city of Oulu, police said Friday.

The suspect also targeted a second child in that attack, which took place Thursday afternoon, and will face preliminary charges for two attempted murdersthe National Bureau of Investigation (NBI) said in a statement.

“The criminal investigation is still at an early stage and the police do not know exactly what motivated the act. However, it is aware that the suspect has a history of far-right actions,” the National Bureau of Investigation said.

Public broadcaster Yle showed images of a pool of blood on the mall floor.

The Prime Minister of Finland Peter Orpo condemned the attack.

“Extremist violence is a real threat in Finland,” Orpo said in a post on social media X. “There is no place for extremism of any kind in this country.”

The 12-year-old boy is in stable condition after being seriously injured in the attack, police said.

The suspect, who was born in 1990, is believed to stabbed the child several times in the back before being stopped by a security guardreports the National Bureau of Investigation.
