Almost 16,000 amateur butchers were injured in Turkey on Friday, the first day of the Feast of Sacrifice, of Eid al-Kebir, announced the Minister of Health.

“On the first day of Eid, around 16,000 people across the country, including 1,274 in Ankara, 840 in Istanbul and 416 in Izmir, presented to health centers across the country due to injuries sustained during the sacrifice,” he announced via X Minister Fahrettin Koca.

In 2023, almost 30,000 people were injured during the four days that this celebration lasts in Turkey, according to the official count.

“The fact that the sacrifices do not carried out by professionals is responsible for these situations”, estimates the minister, who called on those who have not yet sacrificed their animals to be careful.

“Around 16,000 people will not be able to celebrate as they would have liked,” he insisted.

Today’s Sunday marks the beginning of Eid al-Kebirthe most important holiday in the Islamic calendar, which is also known as Eid al-Adha or the Feast of the Sacrifice and commemorates the sacrifice God demanded of Abraham by asking him for the life of his son – whom he finally allowed to live.

On this occasion, the Turks sacrifice mainly sheep and goats and the wealthiest a calf.
