The popular actor suffered an accident on stage Sir Ian McKellen. The 85-year-old actor was taken to hospital after falling off the stage during the performance Player Kings at the Noël Coward Theater in London.

The actor was in a fight scene when he tripped and fell into the void. A spokesman for the theater later announced that Ian McKellen was in “good spirits” and was expected to “make a full and speedy recovery.”

The audience was escorted out of the theater and informed that the evening’s performance had been cancelled.

Sir Ian – who plays the beloved Shakespearean hero John Falstaff – was involved in a fight scene with the actors playing the Prince of Wales and Henry Percy when he fell off the stage. The actor called for help, and the staff rushed to help.

He has undergone a CT scan and is expected to make a full recovery, a theater spokesman told PA news agency. The next performance next Tuesday has been canceled “to give Ian some rest,” he added, but the actor is expected to return on Wednesday.

The spokesman also thanked two doctors who were “on hand in the audience” as well as theater staff for their support.
