Lufthansa, Europe’s largest airline group, will charge from next year up to 72 euros Furthermore per flightin order to cover the rising costs of alternative “green” fuels needed to reduce aircraft emissions.

According to a statement from the company – which also owns Swiss, Austrian Airlines and Brussels Airlines – the additional charges will apply to all departures from the European Union, the United Kingdom, Norway and Switzerland, from January 1st.

The surcharge will start from 1 euro, with the exact amount depending on the route and the fare.

According to Bloomberg, the new fees at Lufthansa coincide with EU regulations requiring airlines to use at least 2% sustainable jet fuel from 2025.

Lufthansa said it could not bear the costs alone.

In 2022, competitor Air France-KLM introduced a surcharge of up to €24 on flights from France and the Netherlands.
