The American journalist Wall Street Journal, Evan Gershkovich (Evan Gershkovich) appeared in court today for the start of his trial on charges of espionage.
Authorities briefly allowed journalists to film the journalist before the trial began behind closed doors in the city of Yekaterinburg.

Gershkowitz, with a shaved head, stood inside a glass cage and quietly said “hello” to fellow journalists he recognized.

Evan Gerskovich has been held since March 2023 on espionage charges and is the first American journalist to be arrested in Russia on espionage charges since the end of the Cold War.
If found guilty, he could be sentenced to up to 20 years in prison.

The American Wall Street Journal reporter – who worked for AFP in Moscow from 2020 to 2021 – is accused of gathering “classified information” about the Russian company Uralvagonzavod – a company that manufactures tanks for Russia’s war in Ukraine – on behalf of the CIA
He, his newspaper and the US government deny the allegations and say he was just doing his job as a journalist accredited by the Russian Foreign Ministry to work there.
