Most of the fires occurred in the wider area of Smyrna, specifically in Ephesus, Menemeni, Krini (Cesme), Torbali and Menderes. According to the Turkish Ministry of Agriculture and Forestry, 16 fires broke out today in the province of Izmir alone – 8 in forest and 8 in grassland – which were tackled by 11 firefighting aircraft, 27 helicopters, 171 water tankers and digging machines and 972 personnel. By evening, 11 of the 16 fires were brought under control.
