Security measures were raised to the “Charlie” level, the second highest, which applies “in the event of an incident or information indicating that there is a possibility of some kind of terrorist act or targeting of personnel or facilities.”
The US military has raised the alert level at several of its bases across Europe, CNN and ABC reported on Sunday, citing officials who spoke on condition of anonymity.
In particular, they said that security measures rose to the “Charlie” level, the second highest, which applies “in the event of an incident or information indicating that there is a possibility of some kind of terrorist act or targeting of personnel or facilities.”
The highest alert level is ‘Delta’ and is activated when a terrorist attack occurs or is considered ‘imminent’.
The US European Command (EUCOM) did not confirm to the French news agency (AFP) the increase in the alert level, saying: “We remain vigilant.”
For its part, the Pentagon said that “due to a combination of factors that could affect the safety of US service members and their families” in Europe, EUCOM is stepping up its efforts to “emphasise vigilance during the summer months”.
The US State Department is advising US citizens in Germany, where EUCOM is headquartered, to exercise extra caution due to the risk of terrorist attacks.
European states have been on heightened alert since last March, when gunmen killed nearly 150 people on the outskirts of Moscow in an attack claimed by the Islamic State group.
