The French finance minister Bruno Lemaire ruled out today calling on voters to choose a far-left candidate from the Insubordinate France party (if that is the only realistic alternative to thwarting a candidate from the far-right National Front.

Marine Le Pen’s RN made historic gains and took first place in the first round of the French parliamentary elections, but the final outcome of the election will depend on the alliances that will be formed in the coming days, ahead of the second round that will be held on next sunday.

Leaders of both the left-wing New Popular Front and Macron’s centrist alliance made it clear last night, Sunday, that they would withdraw their own candidates in districts where another candidate is better placed to beat the RN next Sunday in a runoff.

“The LFI is a danger to the nation,” Lemaire told French radio station France Inter, adding that while he would encourage voters to choose candidates from other left-wing parties in areas where the centrist candidate has withdrawn from the electoral battle, “never » will not invite voters to vote for LFI.
