Meta Plaftorms, the company more widely known as Facebook, said a hacker group had used Facebook to attack Ukrainian public figures, including prominent military officials, politicians and journalists, in the wake of the Russian invasion of the country.
In the last 48 hours, Meta has suspended about 40 fake accounts, groups and Facebook and Instagram pages that operated from Russia and Ukraine and targeted Ukrainians for violating the rules, Reuters reports.
A Twitter spokesman also said that about 12 accounts were closed and the ability to share on several links was blocked because they violate the rules on manipulation and spam.
He said that the investigation so far shows that these are accounts coming from Russia and sought to obstruct the public debate on the conflict in Ukraine.
Meta attributed the operation to a group of hackers known as Ghostwriter, who reportedly managed to gain access to the accounts it had targeted.
The hackers, according to Meta, tried to upload to YouTube accounts videos showing the Ukrainian forces as weak, as well as a video claiming to show Ukrainian soldiers coming out of the forest and surrendering holding a white flag.
