The far-right National Alert (RN) party is not expected to secure an outright majority in the second round of French parliamentary elections on Sunday, a poll published today showed.

It is the second poll in as many days to show Marine Le Pen’s RN winning more seats than any other party, but also falling short of the 289-seat threshold required for an outright majority.

This suggests that a “democratic front”, in which more than 200 candidates across the political spectrum withdrew from the run-off to make way for whoever had a better chance of defeating the RN candidate in their constituency, appears to be working.

The IFOP poll for LCI and Le Figaro shows National Alarm winning 210-240 seats, down from 240-270 before candidate withdrawals.

The left-wing New Popular Front is in second place, garnering 170 to 200 seats, ahead of President Emmanuel Macron’s centrist coalition with 95-125 seats. Conservative Republicans are projected to win 25-45 seats.

Yesterday, a Harris Interactive poll predicted the RN would secure 190-220 seats.
