Explosions hit Kiev, Kharkiv, Ukraine sees Russian offensive slow

by

The dawn of Monday (28) was of more explosions in different parts of Ukraine, while the country’s military says that the Russian offensive has slowed down – Moscow and Kiev agreed on Sunday (27) to negotiate in Belarus.

In Kharkiv, where incidents were recorded, the fighting continues after a Sunday in which the place was disputed between countries. According to the British Ministry of Defense, the country’s second largest city remains under Ukrainian control.

There were also explosions in Kiev, but the Ukrainian government said the city had been quiet for a few hours, a different scenario from that seen in recent days, as the Russian offensive surrounded the capital. Still, British defense says Moscow’s forces remain 30km to the north and are held back by the Ukrainian military defending Hostomel.

Fighting also continues in Chernihiv, in northern Ukraine, where a residential building was hit by a missile, causing a fire. In the region, Zhitomir airport was also targeted overnight, according to Kiev forces.

The launch would have been made from Belarus, despite the country having said earlier that it would not allow attacks from its territory, amid expectations of the Ukraine-Russia talks scheduled to take place there, Ukrainian media reports.

Despite the incidents, both the Ukrainian military and the UK Ministry of Defense say Russia has slowed down its offensive. “All Russian efforts to occupy [Kiev] failed,” the country’s armed forces said, according to local media. For the British, “logistical failures and strong Ukrainian resistance continue to thwart Moscow’s advance,” the ministry said.

On the other hand, the Russian Defense Ministry said it had taken the cities of Berdianski and Enerhodar, as well as the Zaporizhzhia nuclear plant, near Mariupol, according to the Interfax news agency.
