In Germany, a child is killed every half hour sexual abuseannounced Federal Interior Minister Nancy Feser, highlighting the dramatic increase in the number of similar incidents.

According to the minister, in 2023 16,375 incidents of sexual abuse against children were recorded, a number which translates into 54 incidents per day, when in 2022 there were 48 and in 2020 43 such incidents. Over the past five years, the number of reported cases of child sexual abuse has increased by a record 20%.

These, as clarified by the Federal Service of the Police Against Crime (BKA), are only the official numbers, as the incidents that are not reported are estimated to be too many. Many such attacks are kept secret either out of shame or under pressure from family, Ms Feser said. “These are horrific acts that shock and astonish us. Most of the victims knew the perpetrator, who was a family member or a friend or an acquaintance,” noted the minister.

According to the data presented by Nancy Feser, the most incidents (5,065) were reported in North Rhine-Westphalia. Of these, 1,022 involved “serious sexual abuse”. This is followed by Bavaria with 1,882 incidents, of which 286 are particularly serious cases, Lower Saxony with 1,660 and 303 very serious incidents and Lower Saxony with 1,595 complaints and 145 serious cases. The fewest incidents were registered in Hamburg, with a total of 239 complaints, of which 27 were more serious incidents and in Bremen with 134 incidents, of which 15 were more serious.

In 2023 there were also 1,200 incidents of youth sexual abuse, with three quarters involving young women. According to government data, in half of the cases the perpetrator and victim knew each other. “Victims of sexual abuse are very often severely traumatized and often struggle with the consequences of the crime for the rest of their lives,” said VKA Vice President Martina Link.

Even more worrying is the increase in cases of production, distribution and possession of child pornography, with 45,191 incidents for 2023. The numbers, it is pointed out, have tripled since 2019.
