Video captured the moment a British Airways plane was struck by lightning.

Lightning struck the aircraft as it was en route to Heathrow Airport from Stuttgart on Sunday afternoon.

Daily Mail video of the moment the lightning strikes the plane:

The flight departed Germany shortly after 13:00 local time (12:00 BST) and was due to land at Heathrow at 13:40.

But bad weather forced the pilots to divert to Gatwick, where passengers arrived at around 14:00 before being flown to Heathrow.

“It was shocking,” a passenger named Jeco told The Sun newspaper, saying the “British Airways crew were amazing” in the way they handled the emergency.

A spokesman for British Airways confirmed, as reported by the Daily Mail, that flight “BA919 was diverted to Gatwick” due to “weather conditions”.

Lightning strikes on flights are very common and usually harmless. Experts say most airplanes are struck by lightning once or twice a year.
