Spain’s Socialist Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez, who has become one of the EU’s most critical voices against Israel, called on Western governments from Washington on Wednesday not to apply “double standards” to the war in Gaza Strip.

“If we tell our people that we support Ukraine because we defend international law, then we must do the same with regard to Gaza,” he said on the sidelines of a NATO summit, during which the leaders of the military alliance decided to further strengthen their military aid to Kiev.

For the socialist prime minister of Spain, there should be a “consistent political position” on this issue, “without applying double standards”.

“We must create the conditions for an immediate and urgent cease-fire,” he added, warning against the risk of escalation on the border between Israel and Lebanon.

In recent months, Spain has become one of the most critical voices within the European Union against the government of Benjamin Netanyahu. Along with those of Ireland and Norway, Pedro Sanchez’s government recognized the state of Palestine in late May, sparking the ire of the Israeli government.
