Turkey’s equal distances between Russia and Ukraine – Ankara does not close the straits

by

President Tayyip Erdogan reiterated on Monday that Turkey could not abandon its ties with Russia or Ukraine through the Russian invasion, adding that Ankara would implement the Montreux Treaty to cross ships across the Bosphorus to prevent the escalation of the war.

Turkey described the Russian invasion as a “war” on Sunday, citing the Montreux Treaty to restrict the passage of certain Russian ships through the Bosphorus.

Speaking after the cabinet meeting, Erdogan criticized the “indecisive” (as he said) stance of the US and other Western powers on the Russian invasion of Ukraine, calling it a “sign of failure” of the international order.

He stressed that Turkey would not compromise on its commitments to its allies, including NATO, but also could not turn its back on its “national interests” in the region. Erdogan reiterated that he considered the Russian invasion of Ukraine unacceptable.

Reduction of VAT on electricity

Turkey has cut VAT on electricity consumed by households and farmers to irrigate their crops to 8% from 18% to date, President Erdogan said as part of the precision deal.

“By the summer months, we will have brought under control the problem of inflation that plagues our country to a great extent,” said Tayyip Erdogan after a cabinet meeting in Ankara.
