The perpetrator of the murderous attack on the life of the Republican candidate Donald Trump is a 20-year-old man from Pennsylvania, a CNN reporter reported, citing sources.

According to a post by the journalist on X, the FBI has identified the man. However, his name has not been released, nor have his motives.

The perpetrator, CNN reports, had no ID on him, the police identified him based on biometrics and DNA.

The perpetrator of the attack against Trump has been “neutralized”, as announced by the federal police force responsible for the protection of personalities in the USA (Secret Service).

Video on the X platform claims to show the alleged attacker lying dead, while a photo on the same platform shows police removing the gunman.

The attack took place at around 18:15 (local time; 01:15 Greek time), according to the corps representative.

“Tonight what we are describing happened assassination attempt against former President Donald Trump. This is an active crime scene,” said Kevin Rozek, Special Agent in Charge of the FBI’s Pennsylvania office, during a press conference.

Rozek pointed out that the FBI is not ready to release the details of the identity of the attacker, while adding that the priority now is to identify his motive and clarify if others are involved in the attempt.

The FBI official stressed that there is no active threat.

The history of the attempt

The former US president was the target of an assassination attempt on Saturday night during a rally in Butler, Pennsylvania. A gunman and at least one audience member were killed, according to US intelligence, and two other bystanders were seriously injured.

Trump said on social media that he was shot and hit by a bullet in the “top of my right ear.”

The Secret Service said the former president was safe after he was rushed from the scene with blood on his face. A spokesman said Trump was “doing well” after the “heinous act”.

According to the Secret Service, the gunman fired several times from an “elevated position” outside the gathering before being killed by agents. Sources told CNN the attacker was on the roof of a building just outside the speech venue.

Eyewitnesses described a “bloody” and chaotic scene. “It’s pure insanity,” said one rally attendee.

THE President Joe Biden spoke with Trump after the shooting. Biden denounced the violence in remarks Saturday night and said he was “grateful” Trump was safe. Biden, who planned to stay in Delaware for the weekend, is rushing back to the White House so he can continue to be briefed.

The former president of the USA also sent a message to X Barack Obama: “There is absolutely no place for political violence in our democracy. While we still don’t know exactly what happened, we should all be relieved that former President Trump was not seriously injured and use this moment to recommit to civility and respect in our politics. Michelle and I wish him a speedy recovery.”

Butler County District Attorney Richard Goldinger told CNN earlier that the gunman who opened fire was outside the Secret Service’s security perimeter. “I don’t know how he got there, or where he was, but he was outside” of the venue where the campaign event was taking place, he explained.

The alleged assailant fired repeatedly from an elevated position “outside the gathering area”, while accounts of a man in camouflage clothing with a gun in hand walking around the area where the speech was being held.

According to foreign media, the gunman was on the roof of a factory at a distance of about 100 meters from the place where the pre-election speech was held.

Trump’s campaign team announced that the candidate plans to attend the Republican convention, which begins Monday.

“President Trump is doing well” and “looks forward to meeting you all in Milwaukee, Wisconsin for this great convention July 15-18,” the candidate’s campaign team and the Republican party said.
