“We can disagree all we want, but an assassination attempt conflicts with what we stand for as a nation”
The President of the United States addressed a message to the American people on Sunday, Joe Bidenafter the assassination attempt against his political opponent, Donald Trump.
“I have spoken to Donald Trump and I am grateful that he is well and recovering, we had a short but beautiful conversation. Jill and I are praying for him, the US president said at the beginning of his speech, offering his condolences to the family and relatives of the 50-year-old firefighter who was killed at the Pennsylvania campaign rally.
“He was a father, he protected his family from bullets and he lost his life, God rest him. We also pray for the full recovery of all those injured and are grateful to all members of the Secret Service and law enforcement who literally put their lives on the line for our nation.”
Biden then reiterated that there is no place in America for this kind of violence. “An assassination attempt goes against what we stand for, that’s not who we are and we can’t allow it to happen. Unity is the ultimate goal right now. We can debate, we can disagree, this is not going to change.”
Finally, he informed that the FBI continues its investigations, while there is still no more information about the motive of the attacker. “That’s why I’m asking you all not to make any assumptions about what armed the hand of the would-be murderer,” he noted.
“I have ordered the head of the Secret Service to review all security measures that have been taken in advance of the Republican convention,” he concluded.
