The new Associated Press poll also found that only about 3 in 10 Democrats are extremely or very confident that Biden has the mental capacity to serve effectively as president
Nearly two-thirds of Democrats believe President Joe Biden should withdraw from the presidential race and let another candidate lead the race, according to a new poll, undermining his claim that “average Democrats” are still with him.
His new research Associated Press also found that only approx 3 in 10 Democrats are extremely or very confident that he has the mental capacity to serve effectively as president, down slightly from 40% in an AP-NORC poll also conducted in February.
The poll was conducted for the most part before the assassination attempt on Donald Trump on Saturday at a campaign rally in Pennsylvania. It’s unclear whether the attempt affected voters’ views of Biden, but the small number of people polled after Trump’s firing did not provide early signs that his prospects have improved.
Meanwhile, and Vice President Kamala Harris polls almost the same as Biden but the percentage of Americans who have a negative opinion of her is slightly lower.
The poll provides some indication that black Democratic voters are among Biden’s strongest supporters, with about half in the survey saying he should continue to run, compared with about 3 in 10 whites and Hispanic Democrats.
Overall, seven in 10 Americans think Biden should drop out, with the percentage of Democratic voters who share this view slightly smaller than Republicans and independents.
About 6 in 10 Americans want Trump out of office — but relatively few Republicans share that view.
Meanwhile, only about a third of Democrats think Biden can beat Trump. About 3 in 10 think the two are equally likely to win, and 16% say victory is more likely to go to the Republican. Instead, Republicans are overwhelmingly convinced that Trump can win.
Trump also has the edge over Biden on the question of who is better able to handle a crisis, with 38% vs. 28%. Americans appear split on which candidate has the best vision for the country, with 35% saying Biden and 34% Trump.
