United States expresses concern after reports of ongoing telecommunications outages in Bangladesh and condemns police allegedly ordered to shoot protesters in the context of the suppression of the mobilizations, the spokesman of the US Department of State Matthew Miller told reporters today.

In Bangladesh, according to the army, order was restored today after more than 500 arrests and three weeks of student protests that were suppressed, causingthe death of 163 people.

Protests against public sector hiring quotas have escalated into the worst wave of violence since Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina took power 15 years ago. According to the protesters, these quotas favor those close to the ruling party.

A curfew has been imposed, soldiers are patrolling city streets in this south Asian country with the world’s eighth most populous country and order has been restored, according to the military.

“Public order is under control following the deployment of the army,” army chief General Uz Zaman said in a statement.
