“The conditions are undoubtedly maturing. This is a good sign,” Netanyahu told the families of the hostages from Washington, where he will meet with Biden.
Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu told the families of 116 hostages held in Gaza that a deal that would secure the release of their loved ones may be near, his office said on Tuesday.
“The conditions are undoubtedly maturing. This is a good sign,” Netanyahu told the families of the hostages Monday from Washington, where he was expected to meet with US President Joe Biden after addressing Congress.
Efforts to reach a cease-fire deal in Gaza, outlined by Biden in May brokered by Egypt and Qatar, have gained momentum since last month. On Friday, US Secretary of State Anthony Blinken said negotiators “lead to the goal”.
Ruby Chen, the father of an American-Israeli soldier whose body remains in Gaza, was one of the family members who met with Netanyahu.
“He said conditions were ripe, but I’m wary,” Chen told Israeli Military Radio.
It will be Biden’s first meeting with a foreign leader since he opted not to run for president and endorsed Kamala Harris as his successor. Harris is due to meet Netanyahu, who is under increasing pressure from much of the Israeli public to agree to a Gaza ceasefire, this week separately from the Biden meeting.
