US releases 30 million barrels of oil to stop Russia using it as a “weapon”

by

Washington announced today that it will release 30 million oil barrels in an effort to support the international energy market in the midst of the Russian invasion of Ukraine, with the US stressing that it will take further action as needed.

“We are ready to use any tool at our disposal to reduce the disruption of global energy supply as a result of the actions of (Russian) President (Vladimir) Putin,” White House spokeswoman Jen Psaki said in a statement.

“We will also continue our efforts (…) to prevent Moscow from using oil and gas supplies as weapons,” the statement added.

The United States and 30 member countries of the International Energy Agency have agreed to release 60 million barrels of oil from their strategic reserves to stabilize the global energy market, the US Department of Energy said in a separate statement.

“We are ready to take additional action if circumstances so require,” said US Secretary of Energy Jennifer Granholm.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky said today that he had spoken with US President Joe Biden about sanctions against Russia and defense aid to his country. “We have to stop the attacker as soon as possible. “Thank you for your support!” He wrote on Twitter.

According to a White House official, the telephone conversation between the two leaders lasted about 30 minutes.
