The best Bulgarian students in mathematics won five medals in the most prestigious competition in this science worldwide for 2024.
In the 65th International Mathematical Olympiad, the Bulgarian national team won 3 silver and 2 bronze medals and an honorary diplomaannounced the Association of Olympic Scientific Teams.
The Olympiad took place from July 11 to 22 in Britain with the participation of 609 students from 108 countries.
The team is led by Professor Stanislav Harizanov from the Institute of Information and Communication Technologies and the Institute of Mathematics and Informatics of the Bulgarian Academy of Sciences, Assistant Professor Stoyan Boev and Dragomir Grozev.
In the group standings, Bulgaria ranked 27th worldwide and 11th in Europe with 126 points, down from 25th in 2023.
The preparation and participation in the competition is supported by the Ministry of Education, the Bulgarian Mathematical Association, the America for Bulgaria Foundation, the Association of Olympic Scientific Teams.
The International Mathematical Olympiad is the first Science Olympiad. It was founded in 1959 in Romania. Bulgaria, Hungary and Romania are the only countries that have participated in all Olympiad events since the institution’s inception. To date, the Bulgarian team has won a total of 308 medals at the International Mathematical Olympiad: 57 gold, 130 silver and 121 bronze.
