The USA and Japan today condemned China’s “destabilizing” actions, mainly in South China Seaalso expressing concern over Russia’s growing cooperation with Beijing and North Korea, while also announcing the strengthening of their military and defense ties.

According to Washington and Tokyo, the China it aspires to “reshape the international order to its advantage”, which represents “the greatest strategic challenge in the Indo-Pacific region and beyond”.

The ministers of the two countries “reiterated their strong objections to China’s illegal maritime claims (…) and threatening and provocative actions in the South China Sea,” according to the joint statement issued after their meeting in Tokyo.

The foreign and defense ministers of the US and Japan also expressed concern about “Russia’s growing and provocative strategic military cooperation” with China, referring to the countries’ joint military gymnasiums near Japanand denounced Beijing’s alleged support for the Russia’s war effort in Ukraine.

On North Korea, they “strongly condemned the deepening cooperation between Russia and North Korea,” according to the joint statement released after Foreign Secretary Anthony Blinken and Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin met with their Japanese counterparts in Tokyo. Yoko Kamikawa and Minoru Kihara.

The US Secretary of Defense also announced the creation of a new administrative structure in Japan.

This headquarters, which will be commanded by a general, will “enable better interoperability and facilitate joint maneuvers” with Japanese forces.
