Restrictive measures to avoid the spread of zoonosis plague of small ruminants were obtained at Achaiabecause it is an area located in the surveillance zone, which, based on European protocols, is defined at 10 kilometers from the point of detection of the case, in mountainous Corinthia.

The measures were taken after a meeting held today in the Region of Western Greece, chaired by the Secretary General of Rural Development, Giorgos Stratakos.

The meeting was also attended online by the Deputy Minister of Rural Development, Christos Kellas, who, according to the Region of Western Greece, detailed the progress of the disease and the measures taken by the ministry for tracing, a process through which the case was confirmed in mountainous Corinthia.

THE Christos Kellasaccording to the Region, “assured that there is no cause for concern for the consumer public, nor is the disease transmitted to humans.”

He pointed out, however, that “it is an essential issue to protect the Greek livestock industry”, which is why he called on the livestock breeders, “to cooperate with the veterinarians and report immediately, any symptoms they detect, to the veterinary offices”.

“It is important to limit and eradicate the disease in our country,” he emphasized.

“It is a battle against the disease, but also against time, because the more immediately we intervene, the faster we will avoid the effects on livestock units”, noted the Secretary General of the Ministry of Agricultural Development, Giorgos Stratakos and added that “the reason restrictive measures are placed on the movement and transport of animals in the regional unit of Achaia, it is because it is an area located in the surveillance zone, which according to European protocols, is defined at 10 kilometers from the point of detection of the case”.

For his part, the Regional Governor of Western Greece, Nektarios Farmakis, emphasized that “the Region was mobilized from the moment of the appearance of the first cases in Thessaly, with informative meetings in the regional units of Achaia, Aitoloakarnania and Ilia, as well as with recommendations to livestock farmers for taking preventive measures” and added: “It is particularly important to have compliance and observance of the measures indicated by the veterinary directorates of our Region to limit and eliminate the plague zoonosis. It’s the only way to prevent the spread and protect our livestock.”
