The twins were born prematurely in Kyiv on the day of the Russian invasion

by

For US resident Alexander Spektor, the birth of his twin boys came with both fear and joy.

The two children were born prematurely to a surrogate mother in the Ukrainian capital, Kyiv, last week, with childbirth beginning just hours after Russian President Vladimir Putin announced the invasion.

The hospital where they were born was attacked on Tuesday, with hospital staff posting photos of the building’s damage.

“They were taken from a hospital today where there was no shelter, no basement,” the father told CNN on Tuesday. “Every time the city’s air raid sirens sounded, hospital staff and patients had to” run to a church where there was a basement, “he added.

The babies have now been transported to a safe and well-equipped hospital.

Spektor added that he was “incredibly anxious … just anxious, tired, but also incredibly optimistic”.

He is currently in the US state of Georgia, waiting for the opportunity to see his children.

“We hope every day that this moment will come soon,” he said. He added that the babies and the surrogate mother were transported to a safer hospital, while tomorrow they will be expected to receive the supplies they need.
