The Mexican government announced on Monday that it has submitted a request to allow the jailed former vice president of Ecuador, Jorge Glass, to go to a third country.

Mexico cut diplomatic ties with Ecuador in April after elements of the Andean nation’s security forces stormed the Mexican embassy to arrest Mr. Glass, who had taken refuge in the diplomatic mission in December after being granted political asylum. by the Mexican government.

Mexico’s foreign ministry also clarified in a press release that while the settlement of the request is pending, it has asked the Ecuadorian authorities to release the former vice president and transfer him to a “safe” location, taking into account the fragile state of his health.

Mr. Glass attempted to kill himself after his arrest in April, according to his lawyer Sonia Vera.

Ecuador’s Supreme Court ruled a few days after his arrest that, although his arrest was “illegal”, he should remain in prison because of his previous convictions.

Mr. Glass has been convicted twice in corruption cases and is facing a new criminal trial. The person concerned characterizes the prosecutions against him as political persecution.

Mexico, after cutting diplomatic ties with Ecuador following a raid on its embassy in Quito in April, has tasked Switzerland with handling outstanding bilateral issues on its behalf.
