According to an Austrian newspaper, the 19-year-old may have used knives during the attack.
The suspect arrested in connection with a possible terror attack on Taylor Swift’s concerts was reportedly determined to strike, as Austrian authorities discovered chemicals during a search of his home, suggesting he had gone ahead with the planning.
The 19-year-old, originally from North Macedoniais considered the main suspect, while he also had a close associate, a 17-year-old Austrian boy, said director general of public security Franz Ruf.
The two men are part of a small group police are investigating, Roof said, adding that the 19-year-old had pledged allegiance to Islamic State.
“Of course we’re investigating their wider environment,” Roof said, adding that the threat was minimized with the arrests.
Taylor Swift’s three concerts in Vienna, which were expected to attract 195,000 people, were canceled late Wednesday after authorities revealed a terrorist attack was planned. Police have arrested three suspects accused of planning concert attacks.
Searches of the prime suspect’s home in the town of Ternitz near the Hungarian border showed “concrete preparatory actions,” Ruf said, noting that authorities seized chemicals and devices.
The Kurier newspaper, citing sources familiar with the situation, said the suspect had stolen the chemicals from his workplace and built a bomb.
The newspaper also reported that the 19-year-old had planned to drive a car into the crowd outside the stadium, possibly using knives in the attack.
Austria’s interior ministry and intelligence service have not commented on the details of the report.
The concerts were to be part of the American singer’s Eras Tour, which began on March 17, 2023, in Glendale, Arizona, USA, and is scheduled to end on December 8, 2024, in Vancouver, Canada.
Swift, 34, has yet to comment on the cancellations on her official Instagram account, which has 283 million followers.
