Authorities have found Islamic State and al-Qaeda material at the home of the second suspect in planning a terrorist attack on Taylor Swift’s concerts in Austria, according to the Associated Press.

No other suspects are being sought after the arrest of the two, Interior Minister Gerhard Karner said Thursday in Vienna. “The situation was serious, the situation is serious. But we can also say: A tragedy was avoided,” he said.

Austrian security authorities said the second suspect, a 17-year-old Austrian citizen of Turkish and Croatian descent, was arrested by special police forces near the stadium where the concerts were supposed to take place this week. Earlier, a 19-year-old Austrian originally from North Macedonia. The names of the suspects have not been released in accordance with Austrian privacy laws.

Austrian security officials said the two youths wanted to carry out an attack outside the stadium, killing as many people as possible using knives or improvised explosive devices.

They also told a press conference in Vienna that the main suspect, a 19-year-old man, fully confessed to his attack plans. They said he “is clearly radicalized in the direction of the Islamic State and believes it is right to kill infidels.”

The second suspect was hired a few days ago by a facility company that provided services at the venue during the concerts.

Authorities said they found extensive material related to the Islamic State group and al-Qaeda in his home.

Determined to strike the first suspect

The suspect arrested in connection with a possible terror attack on Taylor Swift’s concerts was reportedly determined to strike, as Austrian authorities discovered chemicals during a search of his home, suggesting he had gone ahead with the planning.

The 19-year-old, originally from North Macedoniais considered the main suspect, while he had a close associate, the 17-year-old Austrian of Turkish and Croatian descent, said director general of public security Franz Ruf.

Taylor Swift’s three concerts in Vienna, which were expected to attract 195,000 people, were canceled late Wednesday after authorities revealed a terrorist attack was planned. Police have arrested three suspects accused of planning concert attacks.

Searches of the prime suspect’s home in the town of Ternitz near the Hungarian border showed “concrete preparatory actions,” Ruf said, noting that authorities seized chemicals and devices.

The Kurier newspaper, citing sources familiar with the situation, said the suspect had stolen the chemicals from his workplace and built a bomb.

The newspaper also reported that the 19-year-old had planned to drive a car into the crowd outside the stadium, possibly using knives in the attack.

The concerts were to be part of the American singer’s Eras Tour, which began on March 17, 2023, in Glendale, Arizona, USA, and is scheduled to end on December 8, 2024, in Vancouver, Canada.

Swift, 34, has yet to comment on the cancellations on her official Instagram account, which has 283 million followers.
