British Prime Minister Keir Starmer called Iranian President Massoud Pezhekian on Monday, asking him not to attack Israel and stressing that war is not in anyone’s interest.

Starmer contacted Pezeskian as part of efforts to de-escalate tensions in the Middle East in the wake of the recent killings of Hamas political leader Ismail Haniyeh in Tehran and a senior Hezbollah official in Beirut, which sparked threats of retaliation against Israel.

According to Sky News, the Starmer-Pezeshkian phone call lasted 30 minutes and followed Starmer’s consultations with the US president and European leaders on the Middle East.

Keir Starmer told Massoud Pezeskian he was deeply concerned about the situation in the Middle East, stressing the need for restraint and de-escalation to avoid wider regional conflict.

The Downing Street statement also underlined that the two leaders agreed that constructive dialogue between London and Tehran is in the interests of both countries. However, Starmer told Pezeskian that dialogue between the two countries could only be strengthened if Iran stopped its “destabilizing actions”, such as bolstering the Russian war machine during the invasion of Ukraine or threatening civilians in Britain .
