Hunter Biden had sent a letter to the US ambassador in Rome to promote a project by the Ukrainian company Burisma
Hunter Biden tried to contact the U.S. ambassador to Italy in 2016, when his father, Joe Biden, was vice president, to promote a geothermal project by Ukrainian company Burisma, according to a New York Times report. At the time Hunter Biden was a member of Burisma’s board of directors.
Hunter Biden wrote at least one letter addressed to the U.S. ambassador in Rome on behalf of the energy company, the paper said, citing records it obtained.
His lawyer, Abby Lowell, said Hunter Biden and others asked Ambassador John Phillips and others to introduce them to the president of the Tuscany region, where the company was looking into possible projects.
“No meeting took place, no project was implemented, nothing was requested in the US and only a recommendation was requested in Italy. The letter, as well as those written by others to Burisma, only asked for a recommendation, as hundreds of businesses request from ambassadors and embassies each year.“, he said.
An unnamed source involved in the effort also said the plan never materialized. It is unclear whether the US Embassy in Italy took any action on Burisma’s behalf.
Hunter Biden is not being prosecuted for violating federal lobbying laws for foreign companies. Republicans have alleged, without evidence, that President Biden, his son and other family members engaged in financial wrongdoing, which the White House denies.
White House representatives did not respond to a Reuters request for comment on the report. A spokesman earlier told the paper that Joe Biden was unaware of his son’s efforts at the time. Burisma had no comment.
Phillips, who was then ambassador to Rome, told the paper that he received many letters and did not recall one with Hunter Biden as the sender. The president of Tuscany at the time, Enrico Rossi, said he had never met Hunter Biden and did not recall being contacted by the US embassy to promote any Burisma work.
In another case, Hunter Biden has pleaded guilty to felony tax evasion and is scheduled to go on trial on September 5.
On November 13, he will be sentenced in another case, which involves falsely stating that he was not a drug user in order to buy a gun.
