France mourns the death of the iconic actor, not ignoring the ongoing government crisis that President Macron must face
The summer weather was finally chosen by Alain Delon for his last farewell. “Plein soleil” (full of sun), like the title of René Clément’s film, which in 1960 made him internationally famous. The iconic French actor passed away today, Sunday, at the age of 88. In a low-key announcement, via Agence France-Presse, his three children announced the news.
“Alain Fabien, Anouska, Anthony and (his dog) Lumbo, are deeply saddened to announce the death of their father. He passed away peacefully at his home in Duchy, surrounded by his three children and family. His family asks that you respect his privacy at this extremely painful time of mourning,” the family’s press release said.
The Left goes on the offensive
France therefore spends these hours with the memories of the legend of French cinema, putting aside for a while the unbearable wait for a prime minister and a government. Impatience has especially gripped the “New Popular Front” of the Left, which won the last parliamentary elections and does not understand why President Macron insists on delaying and avoiding inviting the candidate Lucie Castet to form a government and test her strength in Parliament. Castet is asking President Macron to give her a chance to prove whether or not she can work out partnerships and face a motion of impeachment, which her political opponents are sure to file.
Macron’s argument is that a government of the Left has no chance of survival, which is why the president initially refused to even meet Lucie Castet.
Macron’s maneuver or retreat?
But things have changed as it seems, Castet has shown a militant attitude by starting a campaign, and Melanchon’s Disobedients are threatening: With today’s publication in the Sunday “Tribune” they accuse him of an “institutional coup against democracy” and threaten him “to start a process of impeachment, for removal”.
Thus, in an apparent change of tactics, the president of France states that he now wants a discussion. From the seaside resort of Bergachon, in the south of France, where he is spending the summer holidays, he set a meeting with the leaders of the parties for next Friday, with Casset as the first official guest, who will be accompanied by the leaders of the parties of the Left. This meeting is expected with great interest, in order to see if Emmanuel Macron will persist in his argument about the inability of the Left to govern or if he will give the chance to its candidate. The next days until Friday are expected to be rich in consultations and contacts, publicly or behind the scenes.
