German media reported last week that German prosecutors had identified a Ukrainian diving instructor as the prime suspect in the attack.
OR Russia complained to Germany about her investigation into the explosions that hit them Nord Stream gas pipelines in 2022, the RIA news agency reported on Monday, after a key suspect escaped arrest in Poland.
German media reported last week that German prosecutors had identified a Ukrainian diving instructor as the prime suspect in the Nord Stream sabotage attack and had issued an arrest warrant for him in Poland.
Poland received the German warrant, but the suspect has fled the country as Germany had not included his name in a wanted persons database, Polish prosecutors told Reuters.
Moscow believes that the German investigation will be closed without identifying those responsible, RIA reported, citing Oleg Tiapkin, head of the European Department of the Russian Foreign Ministry.
“We have raised the issue that Germany and other affected countries fulfill their obligations under the UN anti-terrorism treaties,” Tiampkin said.
“We have made formal requests on this matter bilaterally, including to Berlin.”
Germany’s attorney general’s office declined to comment on the report reported by RIA when contacted by Reuters. The German foreign ministry did not respond to a request for comment.
The Nord Stream 1 and 2 gas pipelines carrying gas under the Baltic Sea were damaged after a series of explosions in September 2022, seven months after Russia invaded Ukraine.
There has been no claim of responsibility for the explosions. Russia has repeatedly said the attack was carried out by the United States and Britain, which deny it.
The New York Times, The Washington Post and the Wall Street Journal reported that Ukraine — which has repeatedly denied involvement — was behind the attack.
