Putin began the visit by visiting the grave of Akhmat Kadyrov, his father and predecessor in the leadership of Chechnya
Russian President Vladimir Putin arrived tonight in Chechnya, the Russian Caucasus Republic ruled with an iron fist by his close ally Ramzan Kadyrov.
This is Putin’s first visit to Chechnya since 2011.
Kadyrov announced the arrival of the Russian president in a post on Telegram. “A rich program is planned as part of this visit,” he said.
Public Russian television showed footage of Putin arriving by helicopter. Kadyrov and his close associates welcomed him at the airport.
“People will be happy. They will be happy that the president came to the Republic. For us it is a motivation, it is renewal. It is a great happiness,” the Chechen leader told reporters.
According to Kadyrov, Putin began the visit by visiting the grave of Akhmat Kadyrov, his father and predecessor in Chechnya’s leadership, who was killed in a 2004 attack by Islamist rebels.
Earlier today, Putin went to Beslan, North Ossetia, to mark the 20th anniversary of a deadly attack by Chechen Islamists on a primary school.
Chechnya has been ruled since 2007 by Ramzan Kadyrov, whose forces are often accused of human rights abuses. Putin’s visit comes as Ukrainian military operations continue in Russia’s Kursk region, where Ukrainians managed to seize dozens of communities after a surprise attack on August 6. Chechen forces have also been deployed in the Kursk region to repel this attack.
