The death toll from the riots that broke out in Venezuela after the July 28 presidential election has reached 27 dead, Attorney General Tarek William Schaab announced Thursday, during the Supreme Court session that upheld the re-election of Nicolas Maduro.

A previous official tally, released on August 12, put the death toll at 25, 192 injured and 2,400 arrested.

Mr Saab also said the prosecution would “deepen” its investigation into the opposition leader and her presidential candidate. Maria Corina Machado and Edmundo Gonzalez Urrutia are facing investigation for attempted “usurpation” of public office and “conspiracy”.

The Supreme Court yesterday upheld the re-election of Mr Maduro, who was declared the winner with 52% of the vote by the National Electoral Council (CNE). The institution, however, has not released full details of the count by electoral division, as it says it suffered cyber-hacking. The opposition argues that this is a maneuver by the authorities in order not to reveal that it won, that Gonzalez Urrutia’s candidate received “more than 60%” of the votes.

The president of the supreme court, Carislia Rodríguez, emphasized yesterday that there is “evidence of a massive cyber attack against the electoral system”.
