Prisoners took hostages today in a prison in the Volgograd region Russia and killed at least one prison staff member, state media reported. Vladimir Putin has been informed about the incident.

Video circulating on Russian social media purported to show at least two attackers, one of whom said they were Islamic State fighters, taking control of the prison in the town of Surovykino.

At least four prison officers in uniform are seen lying on the floor or sitting in pools of blood in the video.

The IK-19 prisoners are demanding $2 million and a helicopter, local Sapa Kavkaz reports.

At the same time, the kidnappers released its leader Andrei Devyatov, who is hospitalized, a source told the Shot Telegram channel.

“During a meeting of a disciplinary commission, convicts took hostage staff members of the penitentiary,” the penitentiary service of the Russian Federation said in a statement.

“Measures are currently being taken to free the hostages. There are losses.”

The prison in the town of Surovikino is considered a “strict regime” prison colony with a capacity of up to 1,241 male inmates, according to the prison service’s website.
