An earthquake measuring 5.3 on the Richter scale occurred this morning in Portugal, without causing casualties or damage, as announced by the national meteorological service and relayed by Agence France-Presse.

The earthquake was recorded at 05:11 local time (07:11 Greek time) and its epicenter was located at sea, about 60 km west of the port city of Sines (south), the Portuguese Institute of the Sea and Atmosphere (IPMA) said.

The American seismological service USGS announced that it recorded a 5.4-magnitude earthquake at a depth of 17.5 kilometers in this area.

The Spanish National Geographic Institute (IGN) reported that the tremor was felt in many places in Spain, particularly in Huelva (south), and in Morocco.

“Until now, we have not found any human loss or material damage,” the national commander of Portugal’s civil protection service, Andre Fernandez, said at a press conference early this morning.
