Peaceful protests in the streets of Venezuela and international pressure can lead to the removal of President Nicolas Maduro from power, opposition leader Maria Corina Machado said today.

With the disputed presidential election a month away and opposition options narrowing, Machado told Reuters news agency that her alliance had a “strong strategy” to achieve its goal, underscoring the unity between her and Edmundo Gonzalez. Urrutia, who was pitted against Maduro in the July 28 election.

“Coordination between internal and external forces will bring about change,” Machado, who avoids public appearances outside of supporter rallies, told Reuters.

“What is left for Maduro today? A shrunken group of high-ranking army officers, the control of judges and weapons… It spreads fear!” says the opposition leader.

Last week, Venezuela’s Supreme Court, which most observers see as the mouthpiece of power, upheld Maduro’s re-election to the presidency. However, the opposition insists that its own candidate was the winner of the election with a percentage of 67%.
