London, Thanasis Gavos

UK Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer is meeting German Chancellor Olaf Scholz in Berlin as part of his bid to improve EU-UK relations after Brexit.

The meeting is expected to see the start of talks on a new bilateral cooperation treaty, with Mr Starmer seeking priority for British businesses wanting access to the German sector.

According to Britain’s eight-week prime minister, the new agreement will improve defense and security cooperation and boost trade. Mr Starmer has said closer cooperation with the EU will boost the UK economy, help curb immigration and allow the UK to “turn the corner” after Brexit.

The meeting of the two leaders will be followed by a joint press conference.

Keir Starmer will then travel to Paris for the opening ceremony of the Paralympic Games and a meeting with President Emmanuel Macron tomorrow Thursday.

On his trip the British leader will have additional meetings with the chief executives of Siemens Energy, the military vehicle manufacturer Rheinmetall and the French weapons systems manufacturer Thales, among others.
