Trump clarified his stance on Fox News after causing confusion the day before when he hinted in an interview that he would vote for the controversial amendment.
Republican presidential candidate Donald Trump said Friday he will vote against an amendment in Florida that would enshrine a woman’s right to an abortion in the state constitution and repeal the existing ban on abortions after the sixth week of pregnancy.
Trump clarified his stance on Fox News, as he caused confusion the day before when he hinted in an interview with NBC News that he would vote for the controversial amendment.
Abortion campaigners who strongly oppose the amendment have backed Donald Trump’s campaign ahead of the November 5 presidential election, in which the Republican former US president will face off against Democratic Vice President Kamala Harris.
“I think it needs more time than six weeks,” Trump said, adding that he also believes the proposed amendment is too permissive. “So I will vote against her for that reason,” he clarified.
Trump often boasts that he helped overturn — in June 2022 — the US Supreme Court ruling that guaranteed women’s constitutional right to abortion at the federal level by appointing three conservative justices.
