Bassanosaurus-Living Earth Discovered in China About 168 Million Years Ago

by

Chinese and British scientists have announced that they have discovered in China a relatively small (2.8 meters long from nose to tail) but terrifying-looking stegosaurus, Basanosaurus, which lived on Earth about 168 million years ago during the Middle Jurassic Period.

It is the oldest stegosaurus to be discovered in Asia and perhaps around the world, indicating that stegosaurs in general probably first appeared in Asia.

The researchers, who published the study in the Journal of Vertebrate Paleontology, discovered fossilized bones of the back, shoulders, hips, legs and ribs of Bashanosaurus (Bashanosaurus primitivus). The name “Bashan” refers to the ancient name of the area of Chongqing in China, where the stegosaurus was found.

Stegosaurs are identified by large horny plates on their backs, long tails and tiny heads. They were quadrupeds, herbivores and their fossils have been found on all continents except Australia and Antarctica. To date, 14 species of stegosaurs have been identified and Basanosaurus is being added to them.
