“We are candidates for the American presidency. Let’s have a dialogue in a transparent way – with our microphones all the way through,” said the Democratic candidate
The vice president of the United States and the Democratic candidate for the presidency in the November elections, the Kamala Harristoday challenged her Republican rival Donald Trump to a teleconference with their microphones on throughout.
Harris and the former president have both agreed to participate in an ABC News-hosted debate on Sept. 10.
“Donald Trump is surrendering to his advisers who won’t allow him to have an open-mic teleconference. If his own staff doesn’t trust him, the American people certainly won’t,” Harris wrote in a post on X.
“We’re running for the American presidency. Let’s have a transparent dialogue—with our microphones all the way through.”
THE Trump had expressed his preference to have the microphone on and had said he would not like it to be turned off during the final teleconference against then-candidate President Joe Biden.
So-called “hot mics” can help as well as hurt political candidates as they are likely to “catch” offensive comments, which are often not intended for the public.
Closed mics also prevent participants from interrupting their opponent.
A spokesperson for ABC was not immediately available for comment.
The debate will be the first time Harris and Trump have gone head-to-head since Biden withdrew from the race for the presidency after a poor showing on a CNN showdown in June that raised doubts about his mental capacity.
Democratic vice presidential candidate Tim Walsh and Republican candidate Jay De Vance have agreed to cross swords on October 1st on CBS News.
