A referendum on the issue is scheduled to be held in Florida in November at the same time as the presidential election
The Republican candidate for the US presidential election, Donald Trump stood today Saturday in favor of the adoption of an amendment to legalize it cannabis for adult recreational use in Floridathe State where his personal residence is located.
A referendum on the issue is scheduled to be held in Florida in November at the same time as the presidential election.
It is common in the US for voters to vote in national elections and many other local issues at the same time.
The issue is of particular interest to younger voters, as a large majority of people under the age of 50 want to legalize the use of cannabis for recreational purposes.
“In Florida, like so many other states that have already legalized it, an amount of marijuana for personal use will be legalized for adults,” Donald Trump said on the Truth Social network.
“No one should be criminalized in Florida for what is legal in so many other states. We don’t need to waste lives and waste taxpayer money arresting adults for possession of quantities of marijuana for personal use,” he added.
He did, however, call for laws against the use of cannabis in public places “so we don’t smell it everywhere, like in so many cities run by Democrats.”
During his victorious 2016 election campaign, Trump took a permissive stance on the issue of cannabis use, saying he would let local governments handle the issue.
Upon taking office in 2017, he took a more nuanced stance on the issue and supported Attorney General Jeff Sessions’ tough stances on law enforcement.
In 2018, Trump revoked the federal leniency policy implemented by the Democratic administration of Barack Obama regarding the legalization of cannabis for recreational use, giving prosecutors full leeway to prosecute as they wished personal possession of cannabis. However, most prosecutors did not prosecute such cases.
Although three-quarters of Americans now live in states where the use of cannabis is legal, it is not yet legal at the federal level.
