At least 13 people they died on Philippines because of the tropical storm Yagi, while schools and public services are closed today in Manila and neighboring provinces due to the phenomenon.

Yagi made landfall on Monday in the eastern city of Kashiguran in Aurora province, where power was cut, according to a disaster management official who spoke to the Reuters news agency by telephone.

At around 08:00 (local time; 03:00 Greece time), the so-called eye — the center — of the storm was near the coast, off the northern city of Laoag in Ilocos province, according to a weather service bulletin.

Yagi is packing winds of up to 75 kilometers per hour and is expected to move in a northwesterly direction over the South China Sea.

At least seven people died in Antipolo, east of the capital, due to landslides or drowning, officials said. Another four citizens are missing, after a landslide and flash flood.

“A search and rescue operation is underway,” Enrilito Bernardo, another disaster management official, told Reuters by telephone from the city.

Casualties were also reported in central provinces. Two deaths were reported in Northern Samar province due to a landslide, while a resident drowned in Negros Oriental province, officials said. Three people died in the eastern city of Naga, disaster management official Ernesto Elkamel said.

Two more deaths were reported in the central city of Cebu, but it has not been officially confirmed that they were due to the tropical storm, a disaster agency official said.

The Philippines is hit by an average of about 20 tropical storms and typhoons annually.
