The UN High Commissioner for Human Rights today called for an “independent, impartial and transparent” investigation into the “summary execution” of six Israeli hostages in the Gaza Strip.

“We are horrified by reports that armed Palestinian groups have summarily executed six Israeli hostages, which would constitute a war crime,” Volker Turk said in a tweet.

Turk also called for those responsible to be “held accountable”.

The Israeli army announced on Sunday that it had found the bodies of six hostages executed “on contact” by Hamas in a tunnel. However, an official of the Palestinian organization, who asked not to be named, claimed that the hostages were “killed by the gunfire and shelling of the occupier”.
