According to the US Attorney General, the criminal charges relate to Hamas’ “decade-long campaign of mass violence and terror, including the October 7 attack.”
On Tuesday, the US judiciary released documents certifying that six leading figures of the Palestinian Islamist movement Hamas have been charged with “terrorism”.
The documents, dated February 1, show that six senior Hamas figures were prosecuted, including former leader Ismail Haniya, who was assassinated on July 31 in Tehran, and new leader Yahya Sinwar, then head of the organization in Gaza, believed to be the mastermind behind the October 7, 2023 attack in southern Israel.
The criminal charges against Yahya Sinwar and other Hamas leaders are that they “planned this terrorist organization’s campaign of mass violence and terror for decades, including the (attack of) October 7,” US Attorney General Merrick Garland said.
Attacks “over the past three decades” by Hamas have resulted in “thousands of civilians being killed and injured, including dozens of American citizens,” added President Joe Biden’s administration secretary.
Hamas’ unprecedented attack on southern sectors of Israeli territory on October 7, triggering the war in the Gaza Strip, killed 1,205 people, most of them civilians, according to an AFP tally based on official Israeli data.
In retaliation, the Israeli armed forces launched wide-scale operations in the small Palestinian enclave that have so far killed at least 40,819 people, according to Hamas health ministry figures, caused a humanitarian and health disaster and displaced nearly total population of 2.4 million inhabitants. According to the UN, the majority of the dead were women and children.
