German Foreign Minister Analena Burbock is starting a new Middle East tour tonight, which will bring her to Israel and Ramallah, with the aim of supporting international efforts to achieve a ceasefire in Gaza.
This will be the secretary of state’s “ninth trip to Israel and 11th overall to the Middle East region since the October 2023 terrorist attack by Hamas,” spokeswoman Catherine Desauer said at a regular press briefing in Berlin.
Burbok will begin this tour from Riyadh, Saudi Arabia, and then proceed to Jordan, for talks with her counterparts in the two countries. He will then depart for Tel Aviv where he will meet with Israeli Foreign Minister Israel Katz and Defense Minister Yoav Gallad. At the heart of the talks will be “plans for an immediate ceasefire for humanitarian reasons, which should lead to the release of hostages and the delivery of urgent humanitarian aid to the people of Gaza,” Desauer said.
Burbok also wants to speak again with relatives of hostages held by Hamas.
She is scheduled to meet with Palestinian officials in Ramallah, in the occupied West Bank, and with the head of the local government, Mohammed Mustafa, on how to prevent an escalation of violence in the West Bank.
