Dramatic appeal for the opening of a humanitarian corridor in Ukraine, addressed today the EU High Representative, Josep Borrellshortly after the emergency EU Council of Foreign Ministersin which the Minister of Foreign Affairs of Ukraine Dmitry Kuleba participated by teleconference.
“THE Putin “Humanitarian aid must be allowed to reach Ukraine,” he said Borel. “We need green corridors “There is a shortage of food and basic goods to help the Ukrainian people, women and children.” The constant bombardment by Russian forces hits schools, hospitals, with the aim of destroying Ukraine and resulting in more than a million people having already fled the country, Borrell explained. The EU is committed to protecting all refugees and providing humanitarian assistance.
Referring to the bombing by Russian forces of Ukraine’s largest nuclear power plant, Borrell said it was “unacceptable” for the devastating consequences it could have on the whole of Europe. “Russia must respect the security of the nuclear power zone for the security of the entire European continent,” he said.
The EU Council of Foreign Ministers, with the participation of their counterparts from the USA, Canada and the United Kingdom, also discussed the possibility of strengthening sanctions against Russia. “What matters is the implementation of the sanctions that have already been agreed,” Borrell said. However, he said that new sanctions are being considered, including the possibility of excluding other Russian banks from the Swift financial system. He also said that an exchange of views took place on measures related to the energy sector and the closure of EU ports to Russian vessels. “These sanctions were imposed by some countries, but there was no decision,” he said.
“Finally, the dependence on Russian gas, which accounts for 40% of EU consumption, must be reduced. The green transition must be accelerated for geopolitical reasons,” Borrell said.
